Blog Following 101 and a Giveaway!

I want to open today’s post by thanking you all for reading my blog. I hope that you're enjoying it as much as I'm enjoying writing it.  It’s hard work, but it’s a labor of love.  I truly appreciate the kind emails, Facebook messages and text you've sent.  However, it has dawned on me that most of you are probably very new to the BLOGosphere.  So to encourage you to actually subscribe to the blog, “Like” me on Facebook and “Follow” me on Twitter, I’ll be doing my first Giveaway later this week.

Here’s how it will work.

Option 1:  Subscribe to the Blog

You’ll need to click the RSS Feed button

on the right to subscribe or simply click HERE.

Option 2:  “Like” me on Facebook (only available for Facebook users)

Option 3:  Follow me on Twitter  (only available for Twitter users)

Of course I’d love for you to do all three, but just one will suffice for the give-away.  Once you’ve completed one of the above options, you’ll need to Post a Comment.  While I appreciate your private messages, I encourage you to use these options to communicate with me so that I can promote on-site interaction.  This will help as the blog and following grows.  Once you’ve posted a comment on either http://www.dwellbycheryl.com/, Facebook or Twitter, you’ll be entered for a chance to win.  And yes, if you do all three you’ll be entered more than once.

I thought I’d give you a couple of days to sign-up before I announced the give-away in a post.  Lastly, this will be the first of what I hope will become a monthly giveaway.

Thanks so much for your support.  Spread the word…..

"Unlock" the Latest Design Trend

Like me,  you've probably noticed the lastest design trend, keys.  I seem to be running into them everywhere.

Ok I admit it, I couldn't resist.

Don’t "Sleep" on Garage Sales

I think the cold weather has me dreaming of much warmer temperatures and the start of garage sale season.  I must fess up and admit, that as much as I LOVE a deal, it’s often hard for me to drag myself out of the bed before dawn to actually get up for a garage sale.  But when I do, I typically score unbelievable deals.
Here are a few of my favorite finds:

This snack set was $1.00/set!!!  I got 6 sets.

Came home, immediately checked www.replacements.com and discovered the same set for $17.99!

Replacements

I thought this $1 lantern, originally intended to be a picture photo holder, would be really cute on a hook.  I was right.

And this past spring I stumbled upon this French provincial lingerie chest of drawers.

For obvious reasons, it caught my eye, but I wasn’t sure exactly what real potential it had until I did a quick internet search for “Painted French Provincial furniture”.  Here’s what I found.

Needless to say for $12 I snatched it up in a hurry.  After a quick trip to Lowe’s, to pick up some pink paint , Olympic's Muted Fushia to be exact, here was the result.

Of course, it’s January and there aren’t many garage sales these days.  Until then, I can stay nestled snug in the bed and dream of what awaits…

"Feather Your Nest"

Ok, is it just me or are peacock feathers everywhere.  From Kirkland"s to Cracker Barrel (Yes, Cracker Barrel), peacock feathers seem to be one of the latest mainstream design trends.

So go ahead and add a few feathers to your nest, but use sparingly.  Here's how you can make it work.

  • Get inspired by the color scheme alone

  • Or add peacock feathers just as an accent.

Happy Decorating.....

"Distance Decorating Decoded"

I’m so glad to hear from so many of you that you are enjoying my post.  I’m even more excited about the fact that I’m in some way inspiring you to make some changes in your own dwelling.  That is after all, one of my goals.  I hope that each time you visit; you come away with a new idea or sparked inspiration that will help you to realize that even you can do many of the things you see on tv and in magazines.

Because I’m fairly new to the blogosphere, I keep a close watch on my blogs stats.  Actually, I’m probably a little addicted.  By the way, if you’ve yet to SIGN-UP, what are you waiting for?  Tell your friends, follow me on Twitter, share my post on Facebook, repin my pins on Pinterest, comment on my portfolio on Houzz.  Sorry, I digress…..

So far, it seems as if you favorite post was Design in the City, where I told you of my first Distance Decorating project.  Well, I’ve completed the layout and thought I’d share it too.  Hopefully, this gives you a better sense of what my Distance Decorating is all about.  Basically, you receive three resources.

  • The Idea Board- provides an overall sense of the scheme for the room.  It includes a compilation of the elements to be included in the design plan.  For those non-visual readers out there, this is for you.  You’re able to “see” how the room will ultimately come together.

  • The Source List- a detailed listing of the source and pricing for all items recommended for the design plan.  Think of it as a virtual shopping list.  The client can use the listing as a guide for what items should be purchased, either exact or items similar to those recommended

·         The Layout- four to six 3-D pictures of the room from every angle based on measurements submitted.

Pretty cool, huh?  Get your funds together because this service will be available soon!

Winter and Wallpaper

I'm embarrassed to tell say that three of my four Christmas trees are still up. I know, I know, but at least I have the blinds closed.

There's just something so sad about taking it all down.  It's probably one of the worst things about winter for me.  I guess I'm really a sucker for clear lights and sparkly ornaments.  Perhaps a new project would help lift my spirits once the trees are all put away.

Lately, I've been having sporadic thoughts about changing the wallpaper in my living room.  While I like the floral motif, it was one of those "too cheap to pass up" deals, I never really loved the print.  I'm thinking something a little more formal and a bit more modern.

It's no secret that I'm obsessed with damask floral, you may have noticed from my first post and the recent pillow purchase featured in the antiquing post

There's something so sophisticated about it ....

Even in a bathroom.....

It can even be fresh if done in a youthful color scheme.

Needless to say, I'm leaning heavily toward a damask floral print wallpaper.   Here are a few that are in the running.

Classic Silks- American Blinds & Wallpaper

Or perhaps I should go in a more contemporary direction.

with something like these....

I'd love to hear your thoughts on which direction I should go.   Weigh in below (on the site) by clicking comments.

See It, Like It, Do It! - "Front Door Project"

When I purchased my first single-family home in 2007, I recall being so excited about
decorating.  From the inside out beginning with the front door, I had big plans.  While perusing through an issue of Blueprint magazine I stumbled upon this great idea for a front door color.

Blueprint Magazine (Martha Stewart)

I remember thinking, “I want that to be me.”  Sitting on the front stoop reading the Charlotte Observer, sipping my Community Coffee..   You get the idea.  So I went for it.  I painted the door with Olympic's Fuzzy Navel and loved the result.

I know, a bit bright, but very happy and most importantly very me.  I liked it, but apparently the  HOA didn’t, as I received a notice shortly thereafter stating that my fabulous color selection was not an “APPROVED” color option.  Hmmm, I thought I paid the mortgage?  Oh well, the best laid plans….

Front door now, not nearly as “happy” but very much in compliance. I guess it’ll have to do.  Nevertheless, you get the point.  I saw it, I liked it and I did it, and so can you!

Back to School

Beginning Tuesday night, it's back to class for me.  I'm actually excited.  I'm finally taking the class I've been waiting on.  My book arrived from Amazon today, just in time!

The course is Design Presentation (DES 135), but basically I'll be learning how to draw these....

I'm just realizing that by telling you this, you're probably going to expect to see my work at some point.  Yikes!  Well, I guess I can do that considering the fact that I never would've imagined when I went back to school a year ago that I'd be able to do these...

Collage Project

Black and White Project (Of course I selected a shoe)

And the project I'm most proud of, my architectural drawing...

School is officially in session.  Wish me luck!
